Our Agency Stands With a Woman’s Right to Choose
Like so many Americans, we are left lamenting the United States Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade case — negating nearly 50 years of legal precedent — on June 24, 2022.
Here in Georgia, a historically conservative state, the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision Federally afforded every woman the liberty to choose to terminate an unwanted pregnancy — for any reason.
In 2019, conservative Georgia legislators passed a so-called Heartbeat Bill, prohibiting abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected — typically around 6 weeks into the pregnancy when the woman may not be aware she is pregnant. Though it was signed into law by our conservative Governor, that Bill was struck down by a Federal District Court in 2020, citing the Roe v. Wade precedent.
The June 24th Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade now empowers the individual states to determine the legality of abortion for its citizens. While Georgia was not one of the 13 states with a “Trigger Law” on the books that banned abortions once the SCOTUS overruling was announced, in the coming days and weeks, women across Georgia are likely to face an onslaught of conservative legislation to ban abortions and their personal ability to choose.
As a husband of an activist for LGBTQ+ and women’s rights, and as a father of a strong 12-year-old female, I steadfastly believe a woman’s right to make decisions regarding her body and her own personal health to be a fundamental liberty and an inalienable human right.
As the Founder-In-Chief of Captivate, a digital agency driven by the Core Values of Empathy and Courage, I believe simply voicing an opinion in support of a woman’s reproductive rights is not enough — we must lead by taking action.
For that reason, Captivate has joined as a charter member of Agencies for Reproductive Rights — a coalition of 30+ agencies that believe in a woman’s right to choose.
Member agencies have pledged to support reproductive rights by providing the financial benefit of covering necessary travel expenses for any employee residing in a state that has outlawed abortion, allowing them to seek safe healthcare in the closet state that recognizes their liberty to choose.
